Working on my own Japanese meditative garden using plants native to the Chesapeake Bay, I was very intrigued by a similar project of my much more skilled friend Paul McCutcheon, who has been training to become a native plant landscaper and Master Gardener. Paul graciously accepted my invitation to share in this blog his Japanese meditative garden project for a local elementary school. I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness and reflection upon the immediate surroundings put into planning a Japanese garden; however, what I appreciate most about this project is how Paul’s willingness to share his skills and knowledge for the sake of community service influenced a large group of people to commit to using sustainable practices in their community landscaping project. I hope this article encourages you to apply your skills in photography, cooking, carpentry, art, or whatever area of expertise to the occasional act of service to promote sustainable choices in your community. - Jeff
